What to Do If You’re Locked Out of Your Home In Nassau County

What to Do If You’re Locked Out of Your Home In Nassau County.

And, What Not To Do

First things first, do not call 911, unless you’re locked out of your home during an emergency with kids or pets inside.

Don’t panic.  Stay calm.

Finding yourself locked out of your house on Long Island can be frustrating and sometimes downright scary.  Here are some of our recommended steps you can take to regain entrance into your home quickly and safely.

Review Your Access Points

Take a walk around your home and check all windows, doors, and other possible entry points. Sometimes, a window or back door might be unlocked, providing an easy way back in.

Contact Family or Friends with Spare Keys

If you’ve given a spare key to a family member, friend, or neighbor, give them a call. This can be a quick and easy solution if they are nearby.

Try a Flexible Card

Find a thin, most flexible card you have in your wallet and slowly wiggle it in between the door and the doorjamb to try to force the bolt mechanism back into the door. Jiggling the doorknob while inserting the card may help. Typical credit cards don’t work as they are usually too thick. Keep in mind that cards won’t work on deadbolt locks.

Don’t Break Into Your Home

Avoid forced entry into your house by breaking windows or door locks. This action may be ultimately expense and likely unsafe.

When All Else Fails, Call An Emergency Locksmith Service

Most locksmiths in Nassau County (including Lock City!) offer 24/7 emergency services. If you’re locked out late at night or in extreme weather, a quick call to an emergency locksmith can get you back inside safely.

Here are some tips to prevent a lock out from happening again

  • Hiding a spare key in a secure location or in an outside lockbox
  • Giving a key to a trusted neighbor or friend
  • Keep a Spare Key in Your Wallet or Purse
  • Consider Smart Locks
  • Don’t try to pick the lock
  • Don’t try to climb to a second-story window – it’s not worth the risk
  • Don’t break any doors or windows unless it’s a serious emergency
